The invisible threat
In an era where technology permeates every aspect of our lives, a sinister shadow looms over marginalised communities, particularly Roma women. The Feminist Collective of Romani Gender Experts has taken a bold step to address this pressing issue with their project, "Breaking the Digital Chains: Roma Women's Affected by Technology Facilitated Gender-based Violence".
Technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV) has emerged as a growing menace, disproportionately affecting women and girls, with Roma women facing an even greater risk due to intersecting forms of discrimination. This digital dimension of violence has serious consequences, impacting victims' safety, physical and psychological well-being, and overall quality of life.
Impact and shaping EU policy
The Feminist Collective of Romani Gender Experts has conducted research and policy analysis, based on which a social media campaign has been developed raising awareness to the issue of TFGBV. The project's social media campaign reached over 7,000 viewers, with posts on emotional and psychological toll of TFGBV garnering significant attention. This engagement underscores the urgent need for awareness and action on this issue.
The Feminist Collective of Romani Gender Experts' research reveals 92% of EU cyberviolence policies fail to address Roma women's needs, with only 14% of case studies considering intersectional discrimination.
The initiative's policy analysis and recommendations aim to influence EU policies on TFGBV, ensuring that the needs and experiences of Roma women and girls are adequately addressed. This work is vital in shaping a more inclusive and effective approach to combating digital violence across Europe.
Intersectionality at the Core
Recognising the complex interplay of racism, sexism, and digital violence, the project adopts an intersectional lens. This approach is crucial in addressing the unique challenges faced by Roma women, who often experience discrimination on multiple fronts.
By raising awareness and providing tools for Roma women to recognise and report TFGBV, the project empowers them to become leaders of change within their communities. This grassroots approach is essential for long-term, sustainable change.
Breaking Digital Chains
The "Breaking Digital Chains" project represents a crucial step towards decolonising Europe's approach to racial justice and gender-based violence. By amplifying the voices of Roma women and addressing the digital dimension of violence, it paves the way for a more equitable and safe online environment for all.
As we move forward, it is imperative that such initiatives receive continued support and recognition, ensuring that the fight against TFGBV remains at the forefront of Europe's racial justice agenda.
