With so many wrongs in the world, it can seem quite cumbersome to find a way to combat them. Many people ask themselves, “Who am I to do something about the negativity in the world?” Well, who are you not to? Everyone can play a part, big or small. Even during your normal day, one can play a part using Everyday Activism.

What is Everyday Activism?

To make sure we have a clear idea of what Everyday Activism, we consulted Oxford Dictionaries. According to Oxford, “everyday” means “commonplace,” and is the same as “ordinary, common, usual, regular, familiar,” and the list goes on. “Activism” is “The policy or action of using vigorous campaigning to bring about political or social change.” So, putting them together, one could define “Everyday Activism” as “the policy or action of using ordinary activities to bring about political or social change.”

Who are Everyday Activists?

Everyday Activists are ordinary people who use their time and talents to bring about change. These people are the people you see every day. They’re not on TV, or on a newspaper headline, but their work is just as strong more mainstream activists; every bit helps.

How can you become Everyday Activists?

Becoming an Everyday Activist is quite simple. First, we must be knowledgeable of what is going on in the world around you. Upon doing so, many of the world’s injustices become clear and visible. However, to be an Everyday Activist, we must become active, using our own talents and skills to do what we can at our own levels as individuals or even groups, to contribute to bringing about political or social change.

At the ENAR Foundation, we offer opportunities to learn how we as individuals can contribute at our own levels to bring about change—more specifically, Cultural Diversity. One of the many ways we do so is through our “Div’Apéro: Apéros for Diversity” series. On 20 June, 2014, we will host our 6th edition at Place Communale, 18, in the Municipality of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, Brussels. This edition is a very special one as it takes place during the Fête de la Musique and carries the theme of “Music for Diversity.” At this edition we will learn about the role of the entertainment industry in creating and promoting Cultural Diversity.
